FOUNDING MEMBER FOR PRECISION PSYCHIATRY & THERAPEUTICS

Improving the health and quality of life of humans and animals is the goal of Boehringer Ingelheim. Family-owned since its foundation in 1885, the research-driven pharmaceutical company has a rich pipeline in all phases of development, including mental health. Boehringer Ingelheim and the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness share a mutual interest in identifying neuroscience-based behavior and imaging markers to guide the development of targeted therapies for major mental illnesses and subtypes for which no satisfactory treatment option exists to date. By advancing new and innovative approaches and technologies to inform treatment development, we share the goal of redefining mental health to enable people to thrive.

The Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness (PMHW) is a leader in the field of precision mental health. The programs use cutting-edge imaging technology, big data, AI and neuroscience-based measures to advance precision diagnostics and therapeutics.

The vision of PMHW is to reimagine mental health. Our mission is to link variations in individual brain function to mental health outcomes, forging a new roadmap for personalized medicine in mental health. We focus first on depression because it is the leading cause of disability worldwide and because we are equipped to tackle it.  Our studies focus on innovative ways to integrate data and technology to more precisely detect the multiple ways that depression can arise in each individual.  We have developed a new system for detecting different biotypes of depression.  Data and technology are further integrated with novel therapeutics to match biotypes to treatments and, ultimately, to preventions and platforms for promoting wellness. The findings from the Center form a foundation for expanding beyond depression in the future.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the estimated cost to the global economy is US$ 1 trillion per year in lost productivity and talent. The disability due to depression all too often impacts our students and young workforce and can have long lasting effects. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), depression interferes with the ability to complete job tasks about 20% of the time and reduces cognitive performance by about 35%. Indeed, as highlighted by the WHO,  for every US$ 1 invested to scale up treatment for mental health, companies see a return of US$ 4 from improved health and productivity.

We are committed to expediting the transfer of knowledge from academia to the broader society. By bringing together academic experts, business leaders and policy makers, we ensure that the Center’s work is relevant, timely and responsive to the urgent realities of the current crisis of mental health. We recognize corporate thought leaders are placing a priority on a new way  to promote mental health and wellness in the workforce. Through the development of the PMHW Corporate Members Program, we aim to engage with organizations and corporate leaders across the United States and the world.  Members share in the Center outcomes with a mutual goal to improve mental health and wellness in addition to connecting and building relationships with Stanford faculty. The Corporate Members Program supports the Center’s mission to reimagine mental health based on cutting edge insights from data, technology, and therapeutics.
